Brushing and Flossing

  • Brushing and flossing remove germs from teeth that cause cavities and unhealthy gums. Here are some tips for making the most of your Image of child brushing her teethtoothbrushing:
  • Remember to brush 2 times a day for 2 minutes each time
  • Brush in the morning to keep your breath minty fresh 
  • Brush at night after your last meal
  • Brush with a fluoride toothpaste to make your teeth super strong
  • Listen to your favorite song or set a timer for 2 minutes
  • Use an electric toothbrush - it can do a lot of the work for you

Flossing removes germs from in between the teeth. Here are some flossing tips:

  • Floss at least once a day
  • Waxed floss slides between teeth easier
  • Use floss picks in between meals when waxed floss isn’t available
  • Ask your dentist or dental hygienist to show you how to floss

Dental visits

Visit your dentist every 6 months to make sure your teeth are happy and healthy! Here is what to expect when visiting the dentist:Image of child holding radiograph at dentist

  • You will get your teeth cleaned and polished to remove germs
  • The dentist will look in your mouth with a mirror to make sure your teeth and mouth are healthy
  • X-rays may be taken to check the jaw bone and insides of teeth
  • Fluoride will be put on your teeth to make them super strong
  • If the dentist finds cavities or gum disease, you may need more follow-up appointments
  • At the end of the appointment, most dentists provide new toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. Be sure to ask for yours!
